Art comparison

Not to say anything, just a peek at how my mind works.

I am bound up in an 80's frame of mind, just saying, not that I really hoped Dylan Dog to be. (Yeah, right!)

I could give you the whole bull about water symbolism here (not really, never understood that part) but for me the formula is simply called "Sex sells", and boy does it sure work.
(Speaking of which, have some Kylie)

By the flickering light...

…of our living room idol.
We had Skins and The Tudors, high time for some more TV-Show ad posters:

Archer takes the easy route and targets the GTA demographic, while True Blood plays things more clever.

Caprica tempts us with temptation, and frankly who would want to resist?
Must be Mockingbirds these Birds of Prey…

…but speaking of resistance, The Sarah Connor Chronicles show us that the best present to get a boy, is still a homicidal Terminator.

Keeping with the resistance, and because I love that show: V, but no comments on the tacky tag – It’s us V them, it hurts!
Bones going pulp, that’s just too great a design to let it pass.

I wondered why Salt looked so familiar to me...

Working under false pretenses, advertising made for TV-movies
(Death Moon, Florida Straits)

I love the image used for China Girl; the artwork of Auf immer und ewig (roughly: Forever and always) reminds me of it, and of West Side Story naturally.
Both are beautiful images, eventhough Auf immer has me thinking of Eastern Propaganda art for unknown reasons.

Ye olde time

The other Boleyn girl currently stares at me everyday I leave the house, and I sure can’t say that her charm is lost on me. It’s this weeks movie poster, and before you ask, no, I do not have a historicals only calendar pinned on my wall, I just feel drawn to them.
There’s a passion and explosive erotic to this picture, the likes of which often springs at us from covers in the romance section (not that a manly man like me would ever venture there). In my humble opinion it’s a accomplished, erotic piece of movie art. There’s actually a alternate design for The other Boleyn girl, that comes in a simpler, more in you face style, but I’ll spare you that. Instead I’ll give promotionals for the TV-series The Tudors.
Subtle is different, but damn, that lady is a looker (and I guess Rhys Meyers too).

Skins

Random, unplanned post. :)

Stumbled over this ad poster while reading up on new books, or rather through a authors interview.
Now, I've never seen that show, but seeing the poster I assumed it was something like Nip/Tuck or other private TV garbage.
Colour me surprised when I read that this is supposed to be for a teen show?
I mean were titles like Playboy's Teen-Mansion or Roman Orgies of the adolescent already sold?

And wow, what kind of ad would they use for a adult oriented show?
Not saying that I don't like that ad, quite the contrary, it find it to be seriously hot, positively erotic, it just surprised me to find out what market the show it promotes is supposed to be for.

Picture perfect moment

Somebody, I don’t remember who it was anymore, once made the observation that in US movies good girls & heroines are always fair haired, bad girls & villainesses (is that even a word?) are brunettes; V certainly confirms that cliché.

I know! We had V already, but I’m too enamoured with that show and it lends itself just too perfectly to make a further observation on genre conventions to let it pass.
The second picture stems from Brides of Dracula by the way.
On one side we have a self confident, sexy predator, a woman that enjoys sex and openly shows it, in the character of Visitor Diana and on the other we meet the beautiful, but plain looking leader of the resistance, Juliet, sex here goes never farther than a chaste kiss. A similar phenomenon is observable in Vampire movies: It needs the Count’s bite to free his ‘victims’ from the constraints a morally rigid society imposed on them, only after turning Vampire can they freely follow their hearts true desires … there’s a message hidden here, I’m sure of it; “Sexuality is a leech,” perhaps?

Being evil, so those movies insist further, also frees women from the burden of jealousy because neither Diana nor Dracula’s Bride show any concerns over sharing their lovers, nor are they any longer bound to bothersome gender (or race) preferences. It might be of interest to side note that men when they become evil tend to go in the opposite direction, becoming murderously jealous and almost paranoid homophobic.

Picture perfect moment

Per aspera ad astra
I love this scene from the opening to the TV mini-series V.
Or more to the point I’m a devout fan of that show who is more than willing to overlook the many short comings regarding inherent logic and instead to concentrate on the vast highlights.
One of them being this perfect opening shot.
The first time I saw it, it reminded me strongly of the cover illustration for one of Arthur C. Clarke’s novels, Childhood's End I believe it was, that shows a approaching Spaceship and underneath are gathered people that raise their arms to it. Looking up the cover for this book on Amazon I come to the conclusion that this might even have been intentional, what it is without doubt is one of the more interesting homages to Clarke/Kubrik’s 2001 - A Space Odyssey. A clever nod to the classic opening which lets our ape like ancestors meet once again with visitors from space, for a equally, if in a entirely different direction, life changing experience.
Last but not least it symbolizes the age old dream of human kind that must have started when our earliest ancestor, who’s petrified face now again gazes at eternity in this picture set-up, lifted his eyes towards the sky and began to wonder on to our first feeble stretching out to the stars in the shape of Gagarin, Aldrin and Armstrong to a projected future in which we will become the Visitors which other species will lay their eyes on yearning to once grab for the stars themselves…
Shades of Star Wars...
