Pirate day, arr!

"Ay, ye landlubbers!
It's talk like eh Parrot day ... Polly wants-
What? Speak louder bub, I've got me ear full of salt water! ... Oh, I see, mate. We got a us a talk like a Pirate day, makes more sense frankly, scratch that cookie then and, ah, walk that plank if a you would be so nice. And lest I forget: Arr!"

But seriously, what better excuse could there be to cram out that ol' pearl of piraty goodness starring the inimitable Captain Blood, Errol Flynn!
Although, is it just me or does that artist seem to have had a young Ingrid Bergman on his mind when he drew Olivia de Havilland?
It’s like looking at a “For whom the Skull and Crossbones tolls” poster…

Historically random...

Just to illustrate how deeply influenced my train of thoughts is by popular culture:
The time I laid eyes on this poster for the Turkish movie Veda Atatürk I had to immediately think of Dr Zhivago, not hat there was that much of a similarity between the images.

Well... maybe there is.

Ye olde time

The other Boleyn girl currently stares at me everyday I leave the house, and I sure can’t say that her charm is lost on me. It’s this weeks movie poster, and before you ask, no, I do not have a historicals only calendar pinned on my wall, I just feel drawn to them.
There’s a passion and explosive erotic to this picture, the likes of which often springs at us from covers in the romance section (not that a manly man like me would ever venture there). In my humble opinion it’s a accomplished, erotic piece of movie art. There’s actually a alternate design for The other Boleyn girl, that comes in a simpler, more in you face style, but I’ll spare you that. Instead I’ll give promotionals for the TV-series The Tudors.
Subtle is different, but damn, that lady is a looker (and I guess Rhys Meyers too).

She's the right stuff

There are a few things about the advance poster for Amelia that I don’t really like, but it's most of all the positively modern looking style of it which gives the whole set-up an unbearable anachronistic look to my eye. The next thing that negatively stood out to me was the A.E. lettering on her back, it makes me think she’s about to perform as a Steven Spielberg flybot, the first poster design looked probably a lot like this.
As an advance poster I guess it's still passable although I would have preferred something more memorable, that catches the eye and intrigues the viewer...

All in all the picture concept doesn’t work very well for me, but what I love about that poster is the font they used, that A with it’s flying scarf is perfect!
I missed something like it on the poster for The Red Baron, because it ideally transports this idea of chivalry and adventurous spirits we tend to, at least subconsciously, connect with this lost age of flying aces.

Warrior Women

Calling myself a fan of historical movies would be a blunt lie, but I do love redheads and even if I didn’t I would still not be able to deny that the poster for Elizabeth is as stunningly gorgeous a composition as imaginable.

One that always reminds me of the movie Jeanne d’Arc, which features in it's latest incarnation Resident Evil heroine Milla Jovovich in the title role. And there truly is such a unmistakable likeness between the truly majestic beauty of horse riding, dressed in armour Cate Blanchet, to the image of innocence Igrid Bergman represents as Jeanne d'Arc that I feel save to assume this to have been the inspiration behind this take.
